Do you know what the soil is like in the area of ABC Street at XYZ Street? Do you know where the water table is there? Can you get to 30 feet at this site with a small drill?

These are typical questions we get when receiving drilling inquiries. The publicly available Ontario Water Well Records database can be a good source of information that is very popular with consultants.

If you plan to drill there, we may have drilled in that area in the past, maybe even at your site. When we complete a drilling project, we complete a Drilling Report, which contains basic site information, hours, supplies and a description of our work on that project. Over the last 28 years, we have accumulated thousands of these reports, all containing valuable information regarding our work at the sites. This information includes but is not limited to, drilling depths, the type of drill used, and sampling depths. Some reports include soil types, water levels, and even bedrock depths.

We realize that the data in these reports can be beneficial in answering some of the questions mentioned above. Therefore, we figured out a way to access the information contained in the paper reports. We have spent several years and dedicated hundreds of person-hours working on this project. Pertinent information has been input into a geocoded database system, with mapping functionality, based on each of our Drilling Reports dating back to 1994.

Below is a screenshot of a map area, with each green dot representing a Kodiak drilling site. When we click on the dot, basic site information about our work at the location is displayed. Using the references, we can also look up the paper version of the drilling report for even more information. You don’t need to worry about the confidentiality of your data in our files, as we do not disclose the names of our clients when discussing these sites.

This is a screenshot of an area; green dots represent past Kodiak drilling locations. Clicking on the dot gives us site details.

After we completed this project, we decided to take it one step further. We overlaid the Ontario Geotechnical Borehole Database into our system. See below a screenshot of the same area with these boreholes now shown (in red). Also, note that the image on the right depicts a typical entry from one of those borehole locations.

If you would like more information about your area, please give us a call, and we can look up your site address and offer feedback.

This screenshot overlays the Ontario Geotechnical Database (red) with the Kodiak locations (green).

Clicking on the red symbols gives us these pop-up bubbles with the site information in the Ontario database.

Well, we also run a parallel contest for Kodiak personnel. Check out our top 3 photos from the 2021 contest below.

FIRST PLACE:

The GeoTool shown drilling in an area inaccessible by any other drill capable of SPTs.

SECOND PLACE:

The Big Beaver shown soil sampling on a wooden deck.

THIRD PLACE:

The GeoTool shown doing SPTs in a clean environment with an electric power unit (no fumes).

Be sure to keep an eye out for next year’s winners as we already have some great submissions for 2022 and will post the results once the selection committee receives and evaluates them all.

Want the chance to win a 2-night weekend trip to Muskoka?

We are conducting a photo contest for our clients, where the winner will be awarded a 2-night weekend trip on beautiful Lake Muskoka.

Since we are limited access drillers, we take our drills to unique, interesting, and often challenging locations. We’ve taken the Big Beaver into a bathroom, the GeoTool down a railway embankment, the MiniProbe into a factory, the 420 into a basement, the MiniMoles into backyards, the GeoProbe into excavations…the list goes on and on. Our crews love to brag about the tricky spots they encounter and one-up each other on the challenging locations; a photo can tell that story. Although sometimes we get the chance to grab a photo while there, we are usually too busy doing the actual work to snap one.

We know that many of our clients have shot some great photos of us while at their sites and we want to see them.

If you send us your photos, we will enter them in our photo contest, where the winner receives a 2-night weekend trip to the Marriott Residence Inn on Lake Muskoka in Gravenhurst. At the end of each year, we will have our photo contest committee review the photos and pick the winner.

We would also love to consider submissions for our blog, website or social media if you agree to it.

If you have drilled with Kodiak over the years, you have likely had Ryan at your site. Ryan has operated all of our drills over his 18+ years at Kodiak and is quite likely the most experienced limited access driller in Ontario. What you may not know is that Ryan is also a published author.

For those of us in the drilling industry, National Driller (now called, The Driller) is a popular trade publication. The magazine published a 3 part series on limited access drilling, authored by Ryan, back in 2013. Although the articles were written quite some time ago, the concepts he discusses are still relevant today and should be helpful to consultants undertaking drilling projects.

You can now access the article series online at their website by clicking on the titles below.

Part 1 – Location, Rigs for Limited Access Drilling Jobs Demand Creativity

Part 2 – Rig Access Can be Half the Job for Geotechnical, Environmental Drilling

Part 3 – Safety Just as Big on Small Drilling Jobs – Escape Plan Can Prove Crucial for Confined Spaces

Geoprobe 6620

6620dt-epi-service-after-7-We have added another new drill to the fleet of limited access drills.  In keeping with our niche of machines for limited access areas, the Geoprobe 6620 is a great new tool for our drilling tool box.  For those clients who are familiar with our MiniMole, this drill will be suitable for many of the locations where the MiniMole is traditionally used.  Equipped with an automatic 140lb drop hammer, this machine is equally adept at geotechnical drilling as it is using direct push tooling for environmental investigations.  Although the machine is slightly wider than the MiniMole, the increased weight and larger auger motor make it a more powerful alternative for places you can fit the slightly larger footprint of this machine.  This is the largest of our 3 direct push machines, with our MiniProbe being more suitable for tighter spaces and our Geoprobe 420 being very specialized for more access limited areas.

Our Office and Shop Have Moved

WeHaveMovedIn the fall of 2013, after 19 years at the same location, Kodiak Drilling moved to a new location.  Still in Oakville, we have moved to the east end; still with excellent highway access.  Our new facility is more than twice the size of our old location, which makes it much better to handle our ever expanding needs for equipment and maintenance facilities.  Although our clients do not normally see our facilities, the improvements to our behind the scenes infrastructure has improved the quality of our day to day operations and the work environment for employees.  Our new address is 1101 North Service Road East, Oakville, L6H 1A6.  All other contact information (phone/email/web) remains the same.  Drop by for a tour when you are in the neighbourhood.

New Capabilities

Kodiak Drilling has added 2 new drills to our fleet.  These new drills, very specialized machines for environmental soil sampling and monitoring well installations in limited access areas, will provide us with new ways of tackling difficult problems.  More details will follow once we have the machines fully integrated with our crews.

Big Beaver Power Boost

When Kodiak brought Big Beaver drilling to southern Ontario in 1996, it was revolutionary in the field of limited access drilling.  A machine that was larger and more powerful than the Pionjar and smaller and more nimble than the truck and track mounted machines commonly being used.  We brought the capability of doing SPTs with small equipment and introduced the concept of running a drill that was physically separate from a power unit, allowing for drilling indoors without fumes.  Since that time, other modifications have been made, including the introduction of “Shorty”; a short tower that allows us to run the 140lb hammer with only 8ft of headroom.

Now, a significant improvement has been made to one of our units by increasing the output of the power source by over 30% (from 18hp to 24hp).  This increase has allowed us to change the rotation head to increase the torque  from ~500 ft lbs to ~800 ft lbs !  Although the penetration of the drill is still subject to the weight limitations of the machine, the increased rotation torque will allow us to rotate through more difficult formations.  We are constantly being pressured by our clients to push the limits with this machine – this will allow us to push even further in many instances.
