Car-Drill Collision

Sadly, the vehicle driver was killed, when his car struck this drill working along a road east of Toronto.  Drillers and field personnel from the consulting company were also reportedly injured.  Although the cause of the crash is under investigation, the photo is a stark reminder of the importance of an adequate traffic control plan for sites where vehicular traffic is present.  Book 7, the Ontario Traffic Manual (Temporary Conditions) must be consulted in order properly prepare for drilling on or near roadways.  The pdf version can be downloaded by clicking Book 7.  The story of this crash can be found by clicking Car-Drill Collision

Self Auditing

Kodiak has developed a new component for our Health & Safety Management System.  The Site Safety Performance Audit process involves a surprise visit to a drilling site by a Kodiak co-worker to complete an assessment of the performance of the crew at the site.  This process is very brief and will not significantly impact the activities of the drill crew at the site.  The auditor will conduct a brief inspection of the site for safety related issues, in addition to asking the drillers and field personnel a few brief questions.  Items reviewed as part of this process include PPE, utility locates, traffic control, tailgate meetings, equipment inspection, site constraints, among other items.  If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Source

Safety is a key feature of the Fall 2011 edition of The Source, a publication of the Ontario Ground Water Association (OGWA).  Our feature article from a 2010 newsletter entitled Drilling Is Not Dangerous caught the attention of OGWA and was published in the magazine.  The article can be found in the safety section of our articles or in the magazine.  We applaud OGWA for encouraging safety within the groundwater industry.  More information about the Ontario Ground Water Association can be found by clicking OGWA.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our colleague Dave Gunn of Geo-Environmental Drilling who will be taking over the presidency of OGWA.  Dave is well known in our industry as a proponent of safe drilling practices in environmental and geotechnical drilling.

New Stickers

You may have seen one of the new additions to our Health & Safety program; our new bright orange “Safety First” stickers are a reminder that while doing our jobs we should consider safety before taking an action.  The stickers are prominently displayed on equipment and in locations where people are making decisions and taking actions that could affect their safety.  You will notice them on our drills and many of our tools and other equipment.  They are also displayed in many areas in our shop.  We hope that not only will it help instill a safety conscious culture in our workplace, but also remind our clients when they see them to think of safety in doing their own tasks at a work site.

Updated Policies

There are new requirements as of June 2010 in the Occupational Health and Safety Act regarding violence and harassment in the workplace.  These changes include development of polices and programs to address workplace violence and harassment issues.  We have made changes to our Health & Safety Management System to reflect the new requirements.  We would expect that our clients and their clients will also take the necessary steps to ensure their own systems are in compliance with the new requirements.

Feature Article

There is a saying that goes like this: Drilling is not dangerous; it is potentially dangerous.  There are many potential dangers faced by personnel working on and around drilling equipment.  Personnel in this sense includes drillers, helpers, field sampling staff, site occupants, and the general public.  One of the most substantial dangers to all of the above mentioned parties in a drilling project, are the risks associated with underground utilities.  Utility issues are so important to the work of drillers, there is a standalone section on the website along with articles and blog posts on this topic in other areas of the website.  Besides requiring utility locates, what other measures are required to ensure the safety of drillers and the other stakeholders mentioned above?

One of the common methods used by (some) drilling and consulting companies to reduce  the potential dangers, is the completion of a pre-start meeting, commonly called a “tailgate safety meeting”.  These meetings vary in format, but are generally developed in-house by company health and safety personnel, and are generally designed to achieve two main objectives, 1) to make sure that all site personnel are thinking about the safety aspects of all the tasks they are completing in the upcoming site work, and 2) to ensure that all personnel are aware of the site specific hazards that may be encountered at the job site.

As there are no standards for the content or format for such meetings and the quality of the analysis required to complete a tailgate meeting vary widely among companies, Kodiak Drilling undertook to establish a new protocol for completion of tailgate safety meetings.  The development of this new protocol was undertaken with two guiding principals, 1) the process must be comprehensive enough to address many expected and unexpected site safety issues, and 2) be streamlined enough to be completed quickly so that it does not significantly impact on our ability to complete the site work expeditiously.

Achieving either one of these objectives would be easy, but achieving both required the development of a unique system.  The system that was developed has two components:

Tailgate Safety Checklist:  This is one piece of paper that is completed at each job site.  It is a checklist style form that covers topics within each component of the analysis:

1. Project Information and Emergencies
2. Identify Hazards and Concerns
3. Utility Clearances
4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
5. Safety Equipment
6. Traffic Control
7. Equipment Inspection
8. Safety Plan Acknowledgement
9. End of Project Meeting
10. End of Project Sign Off

Health and Safety Plan – Field Work:  This document discusses each of the above listed ten components and provides the necessary information for site personnel to complete the site specific analysis.

When the Kodiak Drilling crew arrives at the work site, they will complete this process with the other project staff.  All site personnel should be familiar with the results of the site specific tailgate assessment, in order to ensure that the drilling is not dangerous.

Kodiak has raised the bar when it comes to tailgate safety checklists, but hopefully others will follow suit and improve the process for everyone involved in undertaking drilling projects.  The tailgate safety meeting process undertaken by Kodiak Drilling is only one component of the company Health and Safety Management System.  For more information on this system, please do not hesitate to contact us.
